Decreased Vascular Access Complications: The Positive Impact on Patients, Clinicians and Healthcare Settings

At the conclusion of this presentation the attendee will: 

  1. Understand the cause and effect that peripheral PIV complications have on catheter dwell time.
  2. Highlight the impact that longer PIV dwell times have on patient outcomes, clinician efficiency, and associated costs.
  3. Recognize that by applying evidence-based best practice standards, longer PIV dwell times are obtainable.
  4. Be empowered to become a change agent in your organization to promote vascular access best practice.

Speaker: Michele Biscossi, ACNP-BC, MS, RN, CNL, VA-BC  

Michele Biscossi is an acute care nurse practitioner and a clinical nurse leader within Interventional Radiology at the Albany Stratton VA Medical Center in Albany, New York. In addition, she is an acute care nurse practitioner in the ER at Saratoga Hospital, in Saratoga Springs, NY. She is twice master’s prepared (first MS was a double major in nursing education & as clinical nurse specialist in critical care). Michele is an adjunct faculty member and clinical instructor at Excelsior College in Albany NY. Michele has been an active member of AVA for more than 16 years, has served of their national Board of Directors, and on various committees. She has also been an active member of INS for several years as well, and has served on their Board of Directors. She is one of the co‐authors of the Vascular Access Certification Exam Review Guide & is three times nationally certified. Most recently Michele is part of a 5 person task force for INS to develop national guidelines for care & maintenance of all vascular access devices for all populations.  She has published in international peer reviewed journals and speaks nationally and internationally on vascular access, most recently in China.
